Kazakhstan is ramping up efforts to simplify Schengen visa procedures for its citizens. This is in line with its commitment to strengthening ties with the European Union (EU). Officials view Schengen visa facilitation talks as a critical step toward boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
Currently, Kazakh nationals face complex requirements for obtaining Schengen visas. These include high application fees, long processing times, and limited visa validity. In contrast, Kazakhstan already offers visa-free travel to many countries, including EU member states. By addressing these disparities, the government aims to make international travel more accessible for its people.
Kazakhstan on Negotiations
Recent developments highlight Kazakhstan’s determination to expedite these negotiations. On December 23, Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko met with EU Ambassador Aleška Simkić to emphasize this priority.
During their meeting, Vassilenko pushed for the EU to start its visa facilitation talks, which would benefit both Kazakhstan and the EU. This follows earlier statements from EU officials, including International Special Envoy David O’Sullivan, confirming talks are underway. It was in June 2024 when the EU and Kazakhstan launched their visa facilitation talks. However, more negotiations are necessary.
In return, Kazakhstan reassured the EU that there will no longer be any cases of irregular migration once the Schengen visa facilitation is implemented. The country has made strides to ensure those entering EU as tourists return to Kazakhstan.
Visa Facilitation Benefits
The primary goals of these negotiations include reducing application fees, issuing longer-validity visas, and speeding up processing times. Both sides agree these measures will foster closer cooperation. While Kazakhstan seeks greater mobility for its citizens, the EU is keen on ensuring secure and efficient migration policies.
In addition, Vassilenko noted that Kazakhstan is preparing to sign the Horizontal Aviation Agreement with the EU. This agreement aims to strengthen business relationships and foster stronger bonds between people. Moreover, the two parties agreed to enhance their cooperation in various fields.
These efforts reflect a broader push to enhance bilateral relations. Simplified visas could significantly boost tourism and business interactions between Kazakhstan and the EU. Officials on both sides have acknowledged the mutual benefits of easing travel barriers. For Kazakh citizens, this would open new opportunities to explore, work, and study in Europe.
Statistics underline the importance of this initiative. Kazakh nationals submitted thousands of Schengen visa applications last year. However, approval rates remain moderate, with many citing lengthy procedures as a deterrent. Simplified processes could increase travel volume and strengthen Kazakhstan’s connectivity with Europe. Compared to neighboring countries, Kazakhstan aims to set a precedent in securing favorable visa terms.
Kazakhstan on Migration Issues
Despite optimism, challenges remain. Security concerns and irregular migration are key issues for EU policymakers. In response, Kazakhstan has proposed robust measures to address these challenges. These include readmission agreements to manage citizens overstaying or residing illegally in the EU. By aligning with EU standards, Kazakhstan hopes to build trust and secure a favorable outcome.
Looking ahead, both sides express confidence in reaching a positive resolution. Negotiations are expected to progress swiftly, with tangible results anticipated soon. Officials remain optimistic about the potential for visa facilitation to transform Kazakhstan-EU relations.
